West of the Cascades, moss is not a someday problem. It grows every winter on shaded and north-facing roofs, works its way under the shingle courses, holds water against the roof, and lifts the shingles until water gets under them. Left long enough it takes years off the roof.

Do not let anyone pressure wash your composition roof. The blast strips the protective granules off the shingles, drives water under the courses, and voids most shingle warranties. It looks clean for a season and costs you years of roof life.
The right approach is to remove the bulk by hand, treat what is left so it dies and washes off naturally over the following weeks, and then change the conditions with metal strips at the ridge so rain carries a trace of zinc down the roof and keeps the surface hostile to regrowth.
On a shaded valley lot, plan on a treatment every two to four years. It is far cheaper than the replacement that heavy moss brings forward.

The process, start to finish
- Look. We assess how heavy the growth is, the roof's condition, and whether it is safe to walk.
- Remove. Heavy moss comes off by hand and soft brush, working with the shingle courses, not against them.
- Treat. A gentle application kills remaining spores. It continues to clear over the next few weeks of rain.
- Clear. Valleys and gutters are cleaned out so the debris does not dam up water.
- Prevent. Zinc or copper strips go in near the ridge to slow regrowth.

How often does an Oregon roof need this?
Shaded and north-facing roofs, every two to four years. Sunnier, open roofs can go longer. Zinc strips stretch the interval.
Does moss really damage the roof?
Yes. It holds moisture against the shingles, lifts the edges so wind-driven rain gets under them, and blocks valleys. Heavy moss can take five to ten years off a roof's life.
Can you pressure wash it instead?
No, and you should not let anyone do that to a composition roof. It strips the granules and voids warranties. Hand removal plus treatment is the correct method.
Will the roof look brand new after?
It will look much better and the moss will be gone, but a treated roof keeps clearing over a few weeks of rain rather than looking showroom-fresh the same day. Staining on old shingles may remain.
